Ullswater – early morning paddle

Ullswater

Capturing Early Morning Quiet on Ullswater

There is a distinct, serene quiet that only exists in the earliest hours of the morning—especially out on the water. This piece was painted from a photograph taken by my son while he was out kayaking on Ullswater as the dawn light began to stretch across the lake.

It’s always special to create art inspired by family memories, and I hope this small picture helps you to know peace and a sense of quiet reflection .

Ynys Llanddwyn

Based on a photograph taken during a visit to Anglesey, Ynys Llanddwyn captures the quiet, timeless charm of Wales’s legendary tidal island. Fluid watercolour washes and soft tones portray the sweeping coast and gentle sea light that give this iconic location its tranquil character. Translating the photograph into delicate pigment and soft blends, the painting reflects the peaceful sanctuary and natural beauty of the island.

The Inca Trail

Based on a photograph captured during a memorable visit to Peru in 2005, The Inca Trail brings a personal journey to life through fluid watercolour. The painting captures the dramatic grandeur and quiet mystery of the Andes, tracing the ancient path as it winds through mountain peaks and atmospheric mist. We walked in the dark to reach the Sungate at Dawn with Machu Pichu below us. Such a special place, or were we just exhausted? Interpreting the original photo into soft washes and rich earth tones, the piece evokes the awe-inspiring scale and timeless spirit of this iconic landscape.

Survival

Survival is a powerful abstract watercolour that channels the raw, quiet resilience of nature. Evoking the moody atmosphere of a remote lake or marshland, the piece blends deep, earth-toned washes with subtle glints of light reflecting off still water. Rather than painting a specific place, the work captures the endurance of wild landscapes—where land and water meet, adapt, and quietly thrive amidst the elements.

Mountain Lake

An abstract study in cool tones and fluid textures, Mountain Lake evokes the quiet majesty of a high-altitude wilderness. Soft watercolour washes blend seamlessly to suggest still waters and towering peaks, with mist-filled valleys creating a calm, meditative atmosphere.

Olives and Poppies

Olives and Poppies Crete

A vivid watercolour capturing a picturesque Cretan hillside in spring, Olives and Poppies contrasts bright crimson wildflowers with the soft, silvery green of olive groves.
Delicate washes and fluid strokes evoke the warm breeze and scent of herbs from this gentle stroll near Koutouloufari – probably on our way to eat fab Greek food again!

Blue Horizon

An abstract watercolour study in light and atmosphere, Blue Horizon suggests the quiet vastness of an open coast without referencing a physical landscape. Soft, horizontal sweeps of blue and neutral tones bleed into one another, creating a calm, meditative space defined by fluid texture and subtle contrast.
